According to the Explanations of the Six Writings (Liushuguo), it is a smaller type of turtledove with white spots on its neck, and its call resembles that of a cuckoo. It is also called bo-gu or bu-gu. Li Shizhen states: The dove is by nature inclined to be close to humans, hence its name. The character bu is an imitation of its call.
