Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): On Base Mountain there is a beast; its shape is like a sheep, with nine tails and four ears, and its eyes are on its back. It is named bo yi. Wearing it prevents fear.
Commentary: Guo Pu says: Bo yi, pronounced bo shi. Note: The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) records a variant form.
