Erya (Approximation of Elegance), Chapter on Explaining Vessels: The biao is called the nie.
Commentary: The iron at the side of a horse bridle.
Shiming (Explanation of Names): Biao means to wrap. It is that which is at the side to wrap and contain the horse's mouth.
Cao Zhi, Poem in Response to an Imperial Edict: The team of four horses moves with dignity, shaking their bits and frothing at the mouth.
Also, Guangya (Expanded Elegance): Biao-biao means flourishing.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: Red reins, flourishing and grand.
Commentary: Biao-biao is the appearance of being flourishing.
