According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a bat.
In the Erya (Erya), regarding the explanation of birds, it is called a bat or a fuyi. The commentary notes that in the state of Qi it is called a zhi, and some refer to it as an immortal mouse.
According to Yang Xiong in the Dialects (Fangyan), from the pass eastward, a bat is called a fuyi, or sometimes a flying mouse, or an old mouse, or simply a mouse.
In the preface to a poem by Li Bai, it is noted that in Jingzhou Qingxi there is a cavern with flowing jade springs, inhabited by a thousand-year-old bat with a body as white as silver.
In the Forest of Changes (Yilin) by Jiao Yanshou, it is written that the bat hides at night and does not dare to travel by day.
In a poem by Han Yu, it is described that the mountain path is rocky and narrow, and at dusk the bats fly toward the temple.
