Classic of Rites (Erya), Explanation of Grasses: The lotus is called fuqu. Its root is called ou.
Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui): Wherever the root-stalks of the lotus grow like the rhizomes of bamboo, each node produces one leaf and one flower, with flowers and leaves frequently appearing in pairs, hence the name ou.
Continued Records of the Broad Study of Things (Xu bowu zhi): The growth of the lotus root corresponds to the months of the year; in a leap year, it grows one additional node.
