According to the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a white fish. According to the Categorized Compilation (Leipian), it also refers to a small fish. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of the Money-makers, it mentions a thousand piculs of zou. The commentary notes that this refers to small, assorted fish. Xu states it refers to dried fish.

In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Xiang Yu, it mentions that a man named Zousheng tried to persuade me. The commentary notes that zou is pronounced like the sound of zou. Fu Qian states this refers to the appearance of a base person. Zan states that according to the Spring and Autumn of Chu and Han (Chu Han Chunqiu), Zou is a surname.
