According to Tang Rhyme (Tángyùn) and Zheng Rhyme (Zhèngyùn), it is pronounced cè jiū qiè. According to Collected Rhymes (Jíyùn) and Rhyme Compendium (Yùnhuì), it is pronounced zī yóu qiè, both sounding like zōu. Shuo Wen (Shuōwén) states: "A district in Lu, the ancient state of Zhulu, founded by a descendant of Emperor Zhuanxu." Xu Yue (Xú Yuē) notes in Mencius: Preface (Mèngzǐ Tící) that "The state of Zhu was renamed Zou by Duke Mu of Lu by the time of Mencius." Also interchangeable with zōu. Records of the Grand Historian (Shǐjì), in the Biography of Mencius, states: "Mencius was a native of Zou." Also a surname. Guangyun (Guǎngyùn) mentions: "During the Han dynasty, there was Zou Yang." According to Zihui Supplement (Zìhuì Bǔ), it is pronounced cóng qǔ qiè, sounding like jù. Records of the Grand Historian, in the Hereditary House of Confucius, states: "Such as Yan Zhuo Zou and his followers." Zhengyi (Zhèngyì) notes: "Zou, pronounced jù. Commonly abbreviated as Zou.
