According to Tang Rhyme (Tángyùn) and Zheng Rhyme (Zhèngyùn), the pronunciation is cè jiū qiè. According to Jiyun (Jíyùn), the pronunciation is zī yóu qiè, both pronounced Zōu.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) states: A small city in the state of Lu, the hometown of Confucius.
In the Zuo Commentary (Zuǒ Zhuàn), Duke Xiang, Year 10: Shuliang He of Zou lifted the city gate with his hands, allowing those trapped inside to exit. Note: Zou was a county in the state of Lu.
Also used as a surname.
In the Book of Rites (Lǐjì), "Tangong" chapter: When Confucius was young, his father passed away, and he did not know where his father's grave was, so he inquired of the mother of Zou Manfu.
