According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means to hold threads and interweave them. In the Biographies of Exemplary Women (Lienü Zhuan), it states that which pushes forward and pulls back is called zong. Also, in the Book of Changes (Yijing), section on Appended Judgments (Xici), it refers to interweaving and bringing together numbers. The commentary states that zong means to collect and gather. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of Zhou, it is used to mean the summary of facts, though it is not so. In the Biography of Emperor Xuan in the Book of Former Han (Qian Han Shu), it is used in the sense of auditing and verifying names and realities.
