In the Stone Drums Inscription it is written as a variant form, and commonly written as the variant form zong. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a palm tree. It can be used to make rain capes. Zhang Yi says: The trunk is one or two zhang (a unit of measure) high, with no branches on the sides, and the leaves resemble wheel spokes, all gathered at the treetop. Under the tree there is bark that overlaps layer by layer, and each layer of bark encircling the trunk represents one node. The flowers are yellow-white, and the fruits produced are shaped like fish roe gathered in clusters. According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), on Stone Brittle Mountain, the trees there are mostly palm trees. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), palm trees are also called pukui. There is also the palm bamboo, which also belongs to the bamboo family. According to the Record of Local Products of the Yizhou Region (Yibu Fangwu Ji), it has bark but no branches, and the stalk is hollow. There is also cliff palm, which is the name of a type of grass. According to Su Song's Illustrated Classic (Tujing), its shape is like a palm tree, it has leaves but does not flower, and gathering its roots to treat fatigue and injury is effective.
