According to the Extensive Rhyme (Guangyun), pronounced zhen (rising tone). According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced zhen (rising tone), which is the same as the sound of zhen (rising tone). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), the original character was written as a graphic representation indicating thick hair. Some editions use the hair radical as a component.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Yong: Thick hair like clouds.
Commentary: Refers to black hair.
Zuo Commentary (Zuo Zhuan), 28th Year of Duke Zhao: The Youreng clan gave birth to a daughter, who had thick, black, and very beautiful hair.
Note: Fu Qian states that beautiful hair is called zhen.
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced zhen (falling-rising tone), which is the same as the sound of zhen (falling-rising tone). The meaning is the same.
