Pronounced zhen (third tone).
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the eyes being constrained and coming to a stop.
Additionally, per the Approaches to Words (Shier) section of the Literary Expositor (Erya), it means heavy or solemn.
In the Commentary of Zuo (Zuo Zhuan), under the third year of Duke Yin, Shi Que says: Those who can harbor resentment yet remain composed are rare indeed. The commentary notes that this describes a calm and steady demeanor. Dai Tong states that it carries the meaning of endurance.
It is also used as a personal name, such as the Right Guard General Zhen of the Jin dynasty.
According to the Phonetic Meanings of the Book of Jin (Jinshu Yinyi), it is also pronounced zhen (level tone).
