According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to the harness of a horse. According to the Dialect (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong, a vehicle harness is called zhou in the regions west of the mountain pass. The Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) notes that it is commonly written in a variant form. Also, in the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of Yin, it is recorded that Di Xin was called Zhou by the world. The commentary notes that according to the Method of Posthumous Titles, one who is cruel and ignores righteousness is called Zhou.
