Xu Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Gate (mén) Zha Kangxi strokes: 13 Page 1333, Entry 12 Pronounced ya. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the opening and closing of a gate. Also, pronounced he. It refers to closing a gate. According to the Corrected Character Compendium (Zhengzitong), it is identical to the variant form zha. Note: nowadays, when transport ships travel back and forth, stones are placed on the left and right like a gate, and boards are installed to hold back water, which are opened and closed from time to time to allow boats to pass. The water gate accommodates one boat, with others following in a line; the gate is called a zha gate, and the river is called a zha river. An official is appointed to manage the zha. The Analytical Dictionary of Characters states it is for opening and closing a gate, but the details are not clear. The Character Compendium (Zihui) states generally that it is identical to the variant form zha, but this is incorrect.
