Wu Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Eye (mù) 瞾 Kangxi stroke count: 18 Page 819, Entry 04 Comprehensive Collection of Characters (Zihui): This character is identical to the character for shine (zhào). According to the Record of Correct Characters (Zhengzitong): During the Tang Dynasty, Empress Wu Zetian created nineteen characters herself, using the character for brilliance (zhào) as her own name. This character shares the same pronunciation and meaning as the character for shine (zhào), and its form evolved from the character for brightness (míng), rather than being composed of two characters for eye (mù). Later, it was incorrectly written as the character with two eyes (瞾). The Brief Record of the Origin of Characters (Lüeji Zishi) further mistakenly wrote it as an empty form. The Comprehensive Collection of Characters (Zihui) altered its writing to the form with two eyes (瞾), and the Supplement to the Comprehensive Collection of Characters (Zihuibu) wrote it as another variant, all of which are incorrect. This character was originally written with the character for friend (péng) placed above the character for empty (kōng).
