Pronounced zhuan. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a type of fish. According to the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), nine crucian carp and zhuan fish are offered. According to the School Sayings of Confucius (Jiayi), the largest of the fish are called zhuan. According to the Spring and Autumn Annals of Master Lu (Lüshi Chunqiu), among the finest fish are the zhuan of Dongting. Also, according to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun), Zhuan Zhu was an assassin from the state of Wu. Sometimes written in a variant form. According to the Zuo Commentary (Zuo Zhuan), then he saw Zhuan Zhu there, who was plowing in the countryside. The commentary states that Zhuan Zhu was a brave warrior.
Also pronounced tuan. According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), the Black River flows south and pours into the sea, where there are many zhuan fish. They are shaped like crucian carp but have pig tails; their sound is like a piglet, and their appearance signals a great drought in the world. The commentary states that the pronunciation of zhuan is like the tuan in tuan-shan (a round fan).

Also pronounced lian. Used in names. According to the Zuo Commentary (Zuo Zhuan), if I do not obtain Zhuan, I will have no one to preside over the altars of soil and grain. The commentary states that Zhuan was the younger brother of the mother of the Marquis of Wei, Yan.
Textual research: In the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial, the original text states nine dried meats of zhuan and crucian carp. Corrected according to the original text to read nine crucian carp and zhuan fish.
