Rhapsody on the Imperial Park (Shanglin Fu) by Sima Xiangru: Adorned and made up, finely carved and decorated. Commentary: Adorned and made up refers to using powder to make the face white and using eyebrow ink to make the eyebrows black.
Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Biography of Liang Ji: The wife of Liang Ji, Sun Shou, possessed a beautiful appearance and was skilled at assuming seductive poses, drawing sorrowful eyebrows, applying a weeping makeup style, combing hair into a falling-horse bun, walking with a waist-bent gait, and smiling to reveal her teeth.
