Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters): To be cautious, composed of the three-child radical.
Guangyun (Broad Rimes): Orphaned and exposed, eliciting pity.
Also, pronounced zhuan (third tone), with a sound close to ruan (third tone).
Zhengzitong (True Character Guide): Based on the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) and the Book of Han (Hanshu), regarding the weak king. Wei Zhao says: This refers to a kind and cautious appearance. The Fangyan (Regional Speech) states: People in Jizhou call the weak and timid chan. The character here should be understood as interchangeable with chan.
Also, in the Liushutong (Six Categories of Writing Principles), it has the same meaning as to advance. Zhu Mou states: When a group of children plays and competes to be first, this term is borrowed for the weak who do not come forward.
Also, pronounced zhuan (fourth tone). The meaning is the same.
