Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) state it is pronounced zheng (rising tone). Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui) and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) indicate the pronunciation is zheng, identical to the pronunciation of the character for to organize or tidy up (zhěng). The meaning is to rescue or help.
Increased Rhymes (Zengyun) defines it as to save or aid.
Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), Twelfth Year of Duke Xuan records: Someone looked down from the opening of a dry well and rescued him.
It also carries the meaning of to lift up. Book of Changes (Yijing), Gen Hexagram states: To stop the lower leg and not lift the toes. Commentary notes that the term for follow refers to the toes.
