According to the Correct Rhymes (Zheng yun), it is composed of the components for assist (cheng) and seal (jie). The common variant is written as jǐn.
According to the Broad Rhymes (Guang yun), it refers to using a calabash as a wine vessel, used during wedding ceremonies.
As stated in the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), under the Wedding Rites for Gentlemen section: They shared four cups and drank from the united calabash. The commentary notes that to share the calabash means to break a calabash into two halves.
