Zi Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Person (rén) Yi Kangxi Stroke Count: 11 Page 111, Entry 28 Pronounced yi (rising tone). The lingering sound of weeping. Book of Rites (Liji), Miscellaneous Records (Zaji): Young children do not weep with a lingering sound. Also, in the Record of Mourning (Xianzhuan): For mourning in the Great Merit (dagong) grade, the weeping consists of three modulated sections and a lingering sound. Zheng Commentary: The sound lingers and fades away gradually. Note: In Great Merit mourning, the intensity of grief is diminished, so the sound of weeping is modulated and drawn out. Young children are not yet capable of producing such a structured sound; they simply express their grief directly.
