Chen Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Tree (mù). Kangxi stroke count: 21. Page 562, Entry 23. Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) and Zhengyun (Dictionary of Standard Rhymes) state it is pronounced you (rising tone). Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) defines it as a tall tree found at the corners of the rivers on Mount Kunlun. According to Tang Yun (Tang Rhymes), Jiyun (Collected Rhymes), and Zhengyun (Dictionary of Standard Rhymes), it is pronounced you (falling tone). It is the same as the pomelo. Liezi (Liezi), Book of Tang Questions (Tangwen pian) states: In the regions of Wu and Chu, there is a large tree named you. Its leaves are emerald green and remain through the winter; its fruit is reddish and tastes sour. Consuming the juice of its rind can cure the illness of cold-induced abdominal pain. Zhengzitong (Comprehensive Dictionary of Characters) notes: This is the common form of the character for pomelo. I observe that while Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) includes the character for you, it does not include the standard character for pomelo, therefore this is not a colloquial variant.
