Pronounced yun.
In the dictionary Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is defined as rapeseed. According to the commentary in the Materia Medica (Bencao), this vegetable easily grows stalks, and the stalks must be picked so that more branches will grow; therefore, it is called rapeseed. People in the Huai region call it stalk mustard.
It also refers to the rue herb. According to the Miscellaneous Records of the Duyang Palace (Duyang Zabi), Yuan Zai built the Yunhui Hall in his private residence; its fragrance originated from the country of Khotan, and its color was as white as jade. It was crushed into a fine powder and used to plaster the walls.
In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes also written in a variant form (yun).
Research note: In the Miscellaneous Records of the Duyang Palace (Duyang Zabi), the text states that Yuan Zai built the Yunhui Hall in his private residence and the fragrance originated from the country of Khotan. In accordance with the original text, the name has been corrected to Khotan.
