According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as the rotten wood of an old house.
According to the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), section on the Offices of Heaven and the Inner Cook: If an ox lows in the night, its meat will have a rotten smell (you). Note: Zheng Sinong says that you refers to the foul smell of rotten wood.
