Pronounced xu (rising tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters): A flexible tree. Its fruit is called a zaodou (acorn cup). Another account states it is the yang tree.
Xu states: The zaodou is called yang, and it also belongs to the chestnut family of trees.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Tang Feng: Gathered together on the bushy oak trees.
Caomu Shu (Commentary on Plants and Trees): It is what is currently known as the zoli (scrub oak). People in Xuzhou call the oak tree xu, and its fruit is the zaodou.
Also, xuxu, the appearance of joy.
Zhuangzi, Qiwulun (Discussion on Making All Things Equal): Dreaming of becoming a butterfly, happily and contentedly being a butterfly.
