According to the Compilation of Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced ji. According to the Approach to Elegance (Erya), in the chapter explaining domestic animals, it is described as a horse with white forelegs. Also, according to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), the Compilation of Rhymes (Jiyun), the Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced xi. The meaning is the same. Furthermore, according to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a type of horse. In the Biography of Sima Xiangru in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is mentioned as a type of horse. It is also commonly written as the variant form xi. In the Account of the Xiongnu in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is mentioned as a rare animal. Shigu states that it belongs to the same category as a mule.
