As mentioned in the Mao Commentary (Jian) to the Great Odes (Daya) in the Book of Odes (Shijing): The reason the oak and brushwood trees grow luxuriantly is that people burn the grass around them, cultivating and caring for them so that nothing harms them. The Explanation of Sounds (Shiwen) states: Mowing and burning grass is called xi. It is also pronounced xi and also pronounced xu.
