Pronounced xue.
In the Etymological Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to work with horn. In the Literary Expositor (Erya), the chapter on implements states that working on horn is called xue. The commentary notes this is the name for processing raw materials. The sub-commentary states this refers to processing the raw material before it is fashioned into an implement, hence this name.
Also used in names. There was a Song dynasty official, Zhang Xue, who served as a compiler in the Imperial Library.
Pronounced que.
Also pronounced wo. The meaning is the same. In the Jade Chapter (Yupian), it is sometimes written as a variant form (que).
