According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it means to awaken or realize, originally written as xiao, and written as xue in seal script. In the Zengyun, receiving instruction and inheriting studies is called xue. Zhu Xi says that xue means to imitate. Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Eulogies (Zhousong): Daily accumulation and monthly progress; learning can accumulate brilliance to achieve clear insight. Book of Documents (Shujing), Charge to Yue (Yueming): The king seeks broad experience to establish achievements. Learning the teachings of the ancients leads to accomplishments.
