Pronounced xue.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen jiezi), it describes a mountain with many large rocks. It is formed from the mountain radical, with the character for study (xue) in its abbreviated form serving as the phonetic component.
As noted in the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), it is pronounced xue. As noted in the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced xue. As noted in the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), it is pronounced xue.
In the work titled Meeting and Composing Verses (Huihe lianju) by Han Yu, it is written: Chanting about the craggy, rocky peaks of Mount Ba, speaking of the heaped waves of the Chu region.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written as a variant form (que).
