According to the Compilation of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced xian, with the same sound as the character for fresh. It refers to living in seclusion in the mountains and dwelling there for a long time. According to the Collection of Characters (Zihui), this is simply the character for immortal. Entering the mountains to attain longevity is called being an immortal. Note: This character differs in both pronunciation and meaning from the character for appearing in the Person radical category. The Corrected Dictionary (Zhengzitong) incorrectly merges these two characters into one and then criticizes the statement in the Collection of Characters (Zihui) as being incorrect, not realizing that these two distinct characters originally existed.
