Pronounced xie. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the harmony and cooperation of the masses. Composed of the radical for strength, with the sound provided by the radical for ten.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Canon of Yao: Harmonizing ten thousand states.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Counsels of Gao Yao: Be respectful and harmonious together.
Also, according to the Progressing Annotations of the Er Ya (Er Ya Shu), it means to submit or to serve. The commentary states that to be harmonious is to be in agreement and to submit.
