According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced yi. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced yi. The Broad Rhymes states it refers to a horse saddle given to a deceased person. The Collected Rhymes cites the Erudite Encyclopaedia (Boya) stating that the combination of this character and the character for fierce indicates a saddle.
According to the Collected Rhymes, it is also pronounced ji. It refers to equipment for a horse. It is sometimes written in a variant form, and also written in another variant form.
It is also pronounced xue. The meaning is the same.
According to the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), in the section regarding the funeral rites for a deceased official, there is a mention of offering a carriage with a deer-skin covering, and leather equipment including this item. The commentary states this refers to leather reins. The Explanation of Texts (Shiwen) states it is pronounced xue.
