Yin Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Corpse (shī) Xie Kangxi Stroke Count: 16 Page 303, Entry 48 Pronounced xie Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) states it is the inner lining of a shoe. Originally written as a variant form (xie), formed by the radical for corpse and the phonetic element (ye). Xu states it is the inlay within a shoe. Also according to Zengyun (Additional Rhymes), it is a wooden clog. The Gusu Tujing (Illustrated Classic of Gusu) notes that within the palace of the King of Wu there was a Resonant Clog Corridor, where the floor was paved with nanmu wood planks. When walking on them they produced sound, hence the name. Du Fu wrote in his poetry: Walking in clogs following the spring breeze. Jiyun (Compilation of Rhymes) notes it is sometimes written in a variant form.
