Pronounced xue.
In the Discussion of Script (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as private clothing. In the Analects of Confucius (Lunyu), it is stated: Red and purple are not used for private clothing. The commentary explains this as clothing worn while at home in private. Ouyang states: It is composed of the radical for clothing, and the phonetic element zhi. In the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), it is defined as undergarments. In the Augmented Rhymes (Zengyun), it is stated that the worn or damaged remnants of clothing are called xie. It also means filthy. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), specifically the commentary on the biography of Shi Fen regarding the term for a latrine vessel, Lu Jing says: Xie refers to a vessel, a pit of filth and defilement. It is also used interchangeably with xie (to treat with familiarity), meaning to be overly familiar or intimate.
