Pronounced xīng. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to becoming sober after being drunk. From the Zuo Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuozhuan): He sobered up and chased Zifan with a halberd. From the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu): Zigong is sober yet acts mad; it need not be caused by alcohol. From the Songs of Chu (Chuci): The masses are all drunk while I alone am sober. Also, according to the Supplemented Rhymes (Zengyun), it means to wake from a dream.
Pronounced xǐng (rising tone). Meaning is the same.
Pronounced xìng (falling tone). From the poem titled Meeting Spring in the Eastern Capital by Han Yu: The morning sunlight enters the window, birds call out, and the twilight does not yet awaken.
Pronounced jīng. Name of a star. According to the Sun Family Charts of Auspicious Omens (Sunshi Ruiying Tu), the Great Awakening is an auspicious star.
