Pronounced xie (falling-rising tone). Refers to mountain streams.
Zuo Si, Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wudu Fu): The streams of Xie are secluded among the ridges.
Annotation: Small mountains separated from a large mountain are called xie.
Also refers to the name of a mountain valley.
Outline of the Comprehensive Mirror (Tongjian Gangmu): The Yellow Emperor ordered Ling Lun to go to the valley of Xiexiao to collect bamboo.
Also used as a variant form (zhuàn) for the character jie.
Book of Han (Qianhan Shu), Treatises on Harmonics and Calendars: The Yellow Emperor sent Ling Lun to Jie Valley to collect bamboo.
Annotation: Meng Kang states: Jie means to shed or detach. Gu refers to bamboo channels. It means to collect bamboo without hooked joints, where the skin has shed. Another theory states it is the name of a valley north of the Kunlun Mountains.
