According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means wide and numerous.
In the Approaching refinements (Erya), specifically the Explaining ancient terms section, it states that this term means large.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), within the Odes of Zheng, it appears in the line: The black robes are grand.
Also, according to the Examination of the Book of Odes (Shi kao) by Wang Yinglin, it means to store.
Also refers to a type of plant. According to the Accounts of anomalies (Shuyi ji), it is also known as sailu, and it grows in the north. An ancient poem states: A thousand miles of sailu grass.
It is also used interchangeably with the character for mat (xi).
Also, according to the Examination of ancient sounds in the Mao Commentary on the Book of Odes (Mao shi gu yin kao), it is pronounced shao, rhyming with the characters for worn and I.
It is also alternatively written as the rhyme word xi.
