Broad Rimes (Guangyun) and Collected Rimes (Jiyun) state it is pronounced xi. Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as a shoe, sometimes also written in a variant form (xi). Book of Mencius (Mengzi) states: like casting away a worn-out straw sandal. Commentary states: a straw sandal. Broad Rimes (Guangyun) indicates a shoe that does not fit the heel securely. It is the same as the variant form (xi). History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Biography of Juan Buyi: rose to welcome him while dragging his shoes. Commentary states: walking while dragging the shoes, describing a state of haste. Also, Broad Rimes (Guangyun) and Collected Rimes (Jiyun) state it is pronounced ji. The meaning is the same.
