According to the Collected Rimes (Jiyun) and the Correct Rimes (Zhengyun), pronounced wu. A type of beast. Note: This is an erroneous character carved by printers for the original term wu (to oppose or contradict). In the History of the Former Han (Hanshu), Biography of Wang Mang: Nothing to oppose his intentions. In the History of the Later Han (Houhanshu), Biography of Huan Dian: Because he opposed the eunuchs, rewards were not bestowed. In Yang Xiong's Dialects (Fangyan): To be in opposition. In the Chronicles of King Mu (Mu tianzi zhuan): One white deer that was opposed. These are all erroneous substitutions for the character wu. Authentic editions of these texts originally used the character wu. The Dictionary of Characters (Zihui) states: Pronounced wu, same as the character for disobedient (wu), which is a great error.
