Pronounced wan. Meaning to scrape or rub. One interpretation is the term wanmo, referring to artisans who polish jade.

Also, pronounced gua. Equivalent to the character meaning to scrape. In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), section Winter Offices, Artificer's Record (Kaogongji), it states there are five types of scraping and polishing work. The commentary notes that in older editions, the character for scrape was written as the current entry. Zheng Sinong states that the artisans of scraping and polishing refer to jade workers. The Explanation of Characters (Shiwen) states that this entry is pronounced gua, with another pronunciation as wan, and another as houguan.
