Pronounced tu.
In the Classic of Rites (Erya), specifically the section on birds, it is recorded: Birds and rats living together in the same burrow are called tu for the birds and shu for the rats.
Commentary: The shu resembles a house mouse but has a short tail. The tu resembles the duan bird but is smaller in size, yellow-black in color. They reside in burrows reaching three to four feet underground, with the rat inside and the bird outside. Today they are found on the Bird and Rat Coexistence Mountain in Shouyang County, Longxi. The Kong clan commentary on the Book of Documents (Shangshu) states that they exist together as male and female pairs. The Zhang clan Geography Record states that they do not form male-female relationships. The character duan was originally carved with the bird radical and the component zhuo.
