According to Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced tu. It refers to the bird known as the adjutant crane.
According to Materia Medica (Bencao), ordinary birds shed their feathers in the autumn, appearing bald. This bird has a bald head that resembles the appearance of such molting; therefore, it is called the bald adjutant. It is noted that in the Origin of Chinese Characters (Shuowen), the original character is written without the bird radical. The bird radical was added by common usage because the adjutant crane has a bald head. Thus, the term implies a bald adjutant, not that the character itself inherently denotes a type of bird.
