Yin Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Wide (guǎng) Kangxi Strokes: 25 Page 352, Entry 24 Pronounced ting. Broadly: A hall or chamber. In ancient times, the place where officials administered government was called the listening chamber (ting). Later, the language was simplified and it was referred to directly as listening (ting), so the radical for wide (guǎng) was added to the character. In the Revised Rhymes (Zengyun), it is noted that the listening chamber is where matters are received and litigation is examined. During the Han and Jin dynasties, it was always written as listening (ting). Since the Six Dynasties period, the radical for wide (guǎng) began to be added.
