Mao Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Hand (shǒu). Kangxi strokes: 14. Page 448, Entry 06. Pronounced tao. In the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it means to grasp or hold. It also means to scoop out. In the Epitaph for Meng Jiao by Han Yu, it describes picking out or extracting. It also means to knock or strike. In the Discourses of Lu (Luyu), it says do not strike the chest. In the Rhapsody on the Long Flute by Ma Rong, it mentions striking the chest and beating the breast. The Shuowen Jiezi also states that it refers to drawing a weapon to practice strikes and stabs. The Book of Odes (Shijing) says turning left and striking right; note that in current versions of the Book of Odes, this character is written as chou. In the Jiyun, it is sometimes written in the variant form tao. It is composed with the radical for scoop, and is distinct from the character qia.
