Yin Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Bow (gōng) Kangxi stroke count: 8 Page 357, Entry 25 Pronounced tao. Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) defines this as a bag for carrying a bow. The character is composed of the radical for bow and the phonetic element. It refers to the hanging decorative part, sharing the same meaning as the character for a bow case. Zuo Zhuan (Commentary of Zuo) states that during the Battle of Yanling in the sixteenth year of Duke Cheng, King Gong of Chu summoned Yang Youji and ordered him to shoot Lu Qi. The arrow struck Lu Qi in the neck, and he fell forward onto his bow bag. The commentary notes that this bow bag is known as a tao. It also refers to a bag for carrying flags or banners. Zuo Zhuan (Commentary of Zuo) notes that banners were stowed inside a tao. The sub-commentary explains that a tao is a bag used for storing flags. It also refers to the book Six Tao. It is interchangeable with the character for covering or concealment (tāo). Zhuangzi (The Book of Master Zhuang) records that if one follows the persuasion, one will present the golden tablets of the Six Tao. The Explanation of Text (Shiwen) records that Sima Biao and Cui Zhuan stated that the golden tablets and the Six Tao are both titles of chapters in the Book of Zhou (Zhoushu). Others say they are books recording secret information. It is also written as Six Strategies (liùtāo). Textual research: In the Zhuangzi chapter Xu Wugui, the text states to follow the persuasion and present the golden tablets of the Six Tao. The commentary by Sima Biao states that the golden tablets and the Six Tao are both titles of chapters in the Book of Zhou. Others say they are records of secret knowledge. We have carefully corrected the original text: the commentary has been changed to Explanation of Text, the name Que has been corrected to Cui, and the term for secret records has been corrected to secret knowledge.
