Book of Odes (Shijing), Beifeng: Gave me a red tube.
Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Ninth Year of Duke Ding: The chapter on the quiet girl refers to the red tube.
Annotation: The red tube is a brush with a red shaft, held by a female scribe to record events and provide guidance.
Commentary: One must use a red one to show that with a red heart, one corrects others.

Also a surname. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of Xia: Yu belonged to the Si surname. His descendants were divided and enfeoffed, taking their state as a surname, including the Tongcheng clan.
Annotation: The Suoyin commentary says: During the Zhou dynasty there was a Duke of Tong, likely a descendant of the Tongcheng clan.
Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): The Duke of Tong was a member of the royal clan of King Cheng.
