Hai Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Rat (shǔ) Kangxi Strokes: 20 Page 1528, Entry 22 Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Pronounced ting. Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun): Pronounced ting. Comprehensive Collection (Yupian): The name of a rat. Literary Expositor (Erya), Explanation of Beasts: A leopard-patterned rat. Commentary: A rat with a pattern like a leopard. Additionally, Orthodox Dictionary (Zhengzitong): The family history of Dou You of the Later Han records that Emperor Guangwu obtained a leopard-patterned rat, which the ministers could not identify. Dou You replied that it was a ting rat, as seen in the Literary Expositor (Erya). When verified, it was indeed so. Zhi Yu’s Records of Decisions in the Three Prefectures (Sanfu Juelu) contains this account regarding Dou You. The commentary by Guo Pu and the Collection of Literature (Yiwen Leiju) both erroneously state that this rat was obtained during the time of Emperor Wu, and that the official Zhong Jun identified it. The Collection of Miscellaneous Records (Yeke Congshu) states that no historical record from the Former Han mentions Zhong Jun saying such a thing, and that Zhi Yu’s account should be considered correct. Additionally, Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced ding. The meaning is the same.
