Chen Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Tree (mù) Ting Kangxi Strokes: 13 Page 540, Entry 10 Pronounced ting Tangyun (Rhyme Dictionary of the Tang) says it is the name of a tree, also known as the mountain pear. Zuo Si in his Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wudu fu) mentions the orange, the wild pear, and the ting tree. Also, the Biography of Filial Sons (Xiaozi zhuan) notes that Yin Boqi gathered ting flowers for food. The commentary explains that ting flowers are the same as crabapple flowers. They bloom in spring and are gathered and sun-dried; when parboiled, they may be eaten as vegetables. Additionally, the Guangya (Expanded Erh-ya) states that ting means thorns.
