Pronounced ti.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a reddish-yellow color of silk. The Broad Record of Matters (Guangya) states it is red.
In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), within the Office of Heaven, the Wine Official section mentions the five types of ferment, the fourth being ti-ferment. The Commentary notes that its color is reddish-red, hence it is named ti.
In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), within the Office of Earth, the Grass Official section states that for all manure and seed types, use sheep manure for red ti. The Note explains that ti is the color of light red silk.
In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), within the Office of Spring, the Commentary on the Master of Ceremonies states that in the current era, the Five Hegemons wear ti-colored robes, which are the legacy of ancient military attire. The Commentary explains that the reddish-red robes are the remaining manifestation of the red color from ancient military clothing.
